info5441665

Generally,

a normal pH range for a dog's skin is between 6.2 and 7.4. However, some scientific studies have shown it can range between 4.84 and 9.95! which is a huge range. This is because different dog breeds and different skin types have a different PH values. Also, the sex of the dog and hormone changes due to the dog being in season can temporarily have an effect on the PH and most often the PH value can be different on the paw pads compared to the body. So it can all get a bit complicated but let's try and keep this in a general view and simple. Generally, many dogs fall under 6.2 and 7.4.

An unbalanced skin pH in dogs refers to a pH that falls outside of this range, either too acidic or too alkaline, this can affect how the epidermis function and being to cause an issue.

If a dog's skin is too acidic (low pH), it can cause irritation, redness, and itching. This can be caused by various factors, such as a bacterial or fungal infection, allergies, or overuse of harsh shampoos or grooming products. On the other hand, if a dog's skin is too alkaline (high pH), it can lead to dryness, flakiness, and susceptibility to bacterial and fungal infections. This can be caused by over-bathing, using harsh soaps or shampoos, or even some underlying health conditions.

You should always speak to your vet if you suspect your dog has an imbalance in skin PH, a misunderstanding can cause your dog a further imbalance and further discomfort.

can I use human or baby shampoo on a dog?

No. I see many people recommending baby shampoo for dogs but our skin is too acidic, human skin is 5.5 -4.7 and newborn baby skin is slightly more alkaline but still too strong for a dogs skin

How to care for my dog's skin It's important to maintain a balanced pH for a dog's skin, as it helps to support a healthy skin barrier and prevent skin infections. To do this you must use a natural and gentle shampoo and other grooming products that work with your dog's skin type, if your dog has greasy or dry skin using the wrong products will worsen the issue and cause further skin imbalance.
